Quarter of Hospitality Businesses to Shut Down in Six Months

The West Midlands' night-time economy is essential to the survival of the area, but it is currently dealing with serious issues that could cause business failures over the coming year. The COVID-19 epidemic, the effects of Brexit, and the cost of living issue have all had an impact on the sector. According to the Night-Time Industries Association, a quarter of businesses will close within six months.

Restaurateur Alex Claridge has been appointed as the region's new Night-Time Economy Advisor by the West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA) to address these challenges.

According to Claridge, rising costs are a bigger threat to the hospitality industry than COVID-19. As the Night-Time Economy Advisor, he will champion the region's pubs, clubs, bars, concert venues, theatres, and restaurants, helping them rebuild after a difficult few years.

The WMCA's Executive Director for Economic Delivery, Skills, and Communities, Julie Nugent, stated that Claridge's role is crucial in creating jobs for local people in hospitality venues across the region, which employs almost 30% of workers in the West Midlands. The aim is to generate excitement for the already vibrant nightlife in the West Midlands and come up with ideas to attract new visitors to support local businesses' growth.
